Farm Aid: Family farmers, good food, a better America
Farm Aid features the best that music has to offer, while remaining true to its ultimate mission.

25 years of great music, supporting farmers, and strengthening America
Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp organized the first Farm Aid concert in 1985 to raise awareness about the loss of family farms and to raise funds to keep farm families on their land. Dave Matthews joined the Farm Aid Board of Directors in 2001. Farm Aid has raised more than $37 million to promote a strong and resilient family farm system of agriculture. Farm Aid is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to keep family farmers on their land. Farm Aid accomplishes this mission by:

Promoting Food from Family Farms
We know that to keep family farmers on the land we have to increase the number of people buying their good food. From our annual concert event that features family farm food and unites farmers, artists, and concerned citizens, to our inspiring and informative tv, radio, mail and web campaigns (including our HOMEGROWN.org website), we are building a powerful movement for good food from family farms.

Growing the Good Food Movement
In order for family farmers to thrive we have to create more markets for them, giving more people the opportunity to access family farm food. Farm Aid fosters connections between farmers and eaters by growing and strengthening local and regional markets and working to get family farm food in urban neighborhoods, grocery stores, restaurants, schools and other public institutions.

Helping Farmers Thrive
For 25 years, Farm Aid has answered 1-800-FARM-AID to provide immediate and effective support services to farm families in crisis. Now Farm Aid's online Farmer Resource Network connects farmers to an extensive network of organizations across the country that help farmers find the resources they need to access new markets, transition to more sustainable and profitable farming practices, and survive natural disasters.

Taking Action to Change the System
Farm Aid works with local, regional and national organizations to promote fair farm policies and grassroots organizing campaigns designed to defend and bolster family farm-centered agriculture. We've worked side-by-side with farmers to protest factory farms and inform farmers and eaters about issues like genetically modified food and growth hormones. By strenghtening the voices of family farmers, Farm Aid stands up for the most resourceful, heroic Americans—the family farmers who work the land. Farm Aid's Action Center allows concerned citizens to become advocates for farm policy change.

Farm Aid started as a benefit concert on September 22, 1985, in Champaign, Illinois, held to raise money for family farmers in the United States. The concert was organized by Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young, spurred on by Bob Dylan's comments at Live Aid earlier in that year. (Dylan said, "I hope that some of the money...maybe they can just take a little bit of it, maybe...one or two million, maybe...and use it, say, to pay the mortgages on some of the farms and, the farmers here, owe to the banks....") Nelson and Mellencamp then brought family farmers before Congress to testify about the state of family farming in America. Congress subsequently passed the Agricultural Credit Act of 1987 to help save family farms from foreclosure.

Today, Farm Aid is an organization that works to increase awareness of the importance of family farms, and puts on an annual concert of country, blues and rock music with a variety of stars. The board of directors includes Nelson, Mellencamp, Neil Young, and Dave Matthews. Young's speeches about the environment are a highlight of the annual shows.

The 2005 concert, marking the 20th anniversary of Farm Aid, took place at the Tweeter Center in Tinley Park, Illinois, with events in downtown Chicago as well. The 2007 Concert took place at Randall's Island in New York City (1st Farm Aid in New York) and was recorded in High Definition to be broadcast on HDNet as a 2 Hour Special highlighting many of the performances from the Allman Brothers and Counting Crows to John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson.

Our Foundations - Doctors Without Borders
create pdf of this news itemprinter friendly
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) (pronounced [medəsɛ̃ sɑ̃ fʁɔ̃tjɛʁ] ( listen)), or Doctors Without Borders, is a secular humanitarian-aid non-governmental organization best known for its projects in war-torn regions and developing countries facing endemic diseases. The organization is known in most of the world by its French name or simply as MSF, but in Canada, Ireland and the United States the name Doctors Without Borders is also used. In 2007 over 26,000, mostly local, doctors, nurses and other medical professionals, logistical experts, water and sanitation engineers and administrators provided medical aid in over 60 countries. Private donors provide about 85% of the organization's funding, while governmental and corporate donations provide the rest, giving MSF an annual budget of approximately US$400 million.[1]

Médecins Sans Frontières was created in 1971 by a small group of French doctors and journalists in the aftermath of the Biafra secession, who believed that all people have the right to medical care regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation, and that the needs of these people outweigh respect for national borders.[2]

Core documents outlining MSF's principles are the Charter[3] and the Chantilly Principles, along with the later La Mancha Agreement,[4] which in Rules, Section 2 addresses governance. MSF has an associative structure, where operational decisions are made, largely independently, by the 5 operational centres (Amsterdam, Barcelona-Athens, Brussels, Geneva and Paris). Common policies on core issues are coordinated by the International Council, in which each of the 19 sections (national offices) is represented. The International Council meets in Geneva, Switzerland, where the International Office, which coordinates international activities common to the operational centres, is also based.

The organization actively provides health care and medical training to populations in about 70 countries, and frequently insists on political responsibility in conflict zones such as Chechnya and Kosovo. Only once in its history, during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, has the organisation called for military intervention. In order to be able to speak and act freely, MSF remains independent of any political, religious or economic powers. The majority of MSF activities are paid for with private donations.

MSF received the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its members' continuous effort to provide medical care in acute crises, as well as raising international awareness of potential humanitarian disasters.[5] Dr. James Orbinski, who was the president of the organization at the time, accepted the prize on behalf of MSF. Prior to this, MSF also received the 1996 Seoul Peace Prize.[6] The current president of MSF is Dr. Christophe Fournier.

Foundations - amfAR
create pdf of this news itemprinter friendly
amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to the support of AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment education, and the advocacy of sound AIDS-related public policy.

In the early 1980s, a group of researchers and scientists including Mathilde Krim, Ph.D., then a researcher at New York's Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, formed an informal study group to investigate the condition that came to be known as AIDS. In 1983, Dr. Krim, Dr. Joseph Sonnabend, Michael Callen, and several others launched the New York-based AIDS Medical Foundation. In Los Angeles, Dr. Michael Gottlieb and Dame Elizabeth Taylor spearheaded the creation of the National AIDS Research Foundation. The two organizations merged in September 1985 to become amfAR.

When amfAR was founded, Dr. Krim and Dr. Gottlieb were named Founding Chairmen and Dame Elizabeth Taylor became Founding National Chairman. More than twenty years later, amfAR remains one of the world's leading organizations dedicated to fighting the AIDS epidemic, and has invested more than $307 million in support of its mission.

Since its inception, amfAR has supported innovative research into HIV prevention and treatment, providing funding to researchers for early-stage projects and enabling young researchers to establish their careers studying HIV/AIDS. amfAR grantees have produced some of the most groundbreaking discoveries in AIDS research, including studies that led to the development of three classes of antiretroviral drugs, the use of antiretroviral therapy to prevent mother-to-child transmission, and the legalization of syringe exchange programs that have drastically reduced the spread HIV among injection drug users. amfAR has supported more than 2,000 research teams worldwide.

lamfAR’s TREAT Asia program (Therapeutics Research, Education, and AIDS Training in Asia) is a network of clinics, hospitals, and research institutions working with civil society to ensure the safe and effective delivery of HIV/AIDS treatments across Asia and the Pacific. The TREAT Asia Network encompasses 20 adult and 22 pediatric sites across Asia and the Pacific. TREAT Asia has made significant contributions in numerous areas, including research reports on the natural history of HIV/AIDS in Asia and responses to antiretroviral therapy; the creation of the first HIV/AIDS observational databases in the region; the foundation of a pediatrics network to improve treatment and care and extend the lives of HIV-positive children; treatment education for healthcare workers and people living with HIV/AIDS; and the publication of special reports on issues such as the rise in HIV among men who have sex with men in Asia.

The MSM Initiative was launched in 2007 to reduce rates of HIV infection among men who have sex with men (MSM) in resource-limited countries. This initiative provides small targeted grants to grassroots organizations in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Eastern Europe to support HIV/AIDS services for MSM. Through the Initiative, amfAR is a staunch advocate of increased funding for prevention and treatment programs for MSM, and speaks out against stigma, discrimination, and violence.

As an advocate of evidence-based AIDS-related public policy, amfAR works to secure necessary increases in funding for HIV/AIDS research, promote the development of a comprehensive national HIV/AIDS strategy, expand access to care and treatment, and protect the civil rights of all people affected by HIV.

amfAR distributes information on important AIDS-related research, treatment, prevention, and policy issues to a range of audiences. In addition to its website, , it publishes the biannual newsletter Innovations and the quarterly TREAT Asia Report.

amfAR’s board of trustees is led by Chairman of the Board Kenneth Cole. Dr. Mathilde Krim is Founding Chairman and Elizabeth Taylor is Founding International Chairman. Longtime supporter Sharon Stone is Global Fundraising Chairman. Acclaimed actress Natasha Richardson was involved with amfAR for more than 15 years and served on the board from 2006 until her death in March 2009. Kevin Robert Frost became amfAR’s CEO in 2007.

Fundraising
amfAR gala at the Austrian parliament building (Life Ball 2010)As one of the world’s leading organizations dedicated to fighting HIV/AIDS, amfAR has invested more than $307 million for research, prevention, treatment education, and advocacy. It regularly holds benefit events, including Cinema Against AIDS galas in Cannes, Dubai, and Toronto; annual gala events in New York and San Francisco; and TWO x TWO for AIDS and Art, held in Dallas.

Numerous public figures have lent their support to raising funds for amfAR’s programs. At its gala events, amfAR honors individuals who have made significant contributions of time, talent, and resources to the fight against AIDS with its Award of Courage. Recipients include Zackie Achmat, Richard Gere, Whoopi Goldberg, Larry Kramer, Tony Kushner, Patti LaBelle, Sumner Redstone, and Anna Wintour.

Average Wait Time for Organs in the United States
create pdf of this news itemprinter friendly
The Matching Process — Waiting List
Organs that Can be Donated/Transplanted
On this page:
Waiting List
Identifying Organ Recipients

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Waiting List
Here are the necessary steps to get on the national waiting list:

Obtain a referral from a physician.
Contact a transplant hospital . Learn as much as possible about the 200 plus transplant hospitals in the United States and choose one based on individual needs, including insurance, location, finances, and support group availability.
Schedule an appointment for evaluation at the transplant hospital to determine if you are an appropriate candidate for a transplant.
During the evaluation, ask questions to learn as much as possible about the hospital and its transplant team.
Once the evaluation is completed, the hospital's transplant team will determine when it is appropriate to be added to the national waiting list.
The United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) maintains a centralized computer network, UNet sm , that links all organ procurement organizations (OPOs) and transplant centers. The national waiting list is maintained on UNet sm . This list is open only to transplant professionals who are members of the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network. It cannot be accessed by the public.

Patients are not notified by UNOS when they are added to the waiting list. The transplant team that did the evaluation contacts the patient in writing within 10 days and notifies the patient of the date and time their name was added to the list. The patient then directs questions about their status on the waiting list to the transplant center’s transplant team.

Who Gets a Heart?
The average national waiting time for a heart is 230 days. (UNOS/OPTN Annual Report 2003) People waiting for a heart transplant are assigned a status code, which indicates how urgently they need a heart. Because thoracic organs such as the heart and lungs can only survive outside the body for 4 to 6 hours (Partnering With Your Transplant Team (PDF), page 10), they are given first to people who live near the place where the donor is hospitalized. If no one near the donor is a match for the heart, the transplant team starts searching farther away through a series of zones in a specific sequence. See the OPTN/UNOS Allocation of Thoracic Organs Policy (PDF) for details.

Who Gets a Lung?
The average waiting time for a lung is 1,068 days. (UNOS/OPTN Annual Report 2003) The UNOS team divides people waiting for lung transplants into two groups – people who need only one new lung and those who need two. The lung allocation system uses clinical information—including lab values, test results, and disease diagnosis—to estimate the urgency of a candidate’s need for transplant and the likelihood of prolonged survival following the transplant. This lung allocation score, as well as blood group, age, and distance from the donor hospital are considered to determine the order in which a donated lung is offered to candidate recipients. Distance is important because lungs can only survive outside the body for 4 to 6 hours (Partnering With Your Transplant Team (PDF) , page 10); they are offered first to people near the donor. If no one near the donor is a match for the lung, the transplant team starts searching farther away through a series of zones in a specific sequence. A pair of lungs will either be given to one person who needs them both, or divided between two people who need single lung transplants. See the OPTN/UNOS Allocation of Thoracic Organs Policy (PDF) for details.

Who Gets a Heart and a Lung?
Candidates for a heart-lung transplant are registered on both the UNOS Heart Patient Waiting List and the UNOS Lung Patient Waiting List. If a donor heart is available, the patient will receive a lung to go with it from the same donor. If the patient is eligible to receive a lung, the donor’s heart will be given to the heart/lung patient as well. Because thoracic organs can only survive outside the body for 4 to 6 hours ( Partnering With Your Transplant Team (PDF) , page 10), they are given first to people near the donor. If no one near the donor is a match for the heart and lungs, the procurement team starts searching farther away through a series of zones in a specific sequence. See the OPTN/UNOS Allocation of Thoracic Organs Policy (PDF) for details.

Who Gets a Liver?
The average waiting time for a liver is 796 days. (UNOS/OPTN Annual Report 2003) Candidates who need a liver transplant are given a MELD/PELD score (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease/Pediatric End-Stage Liver Disease) that indicates how urgently they need the organ. A liver will be offered to the candidate with a matching tissue type and the highest MELD/PELD score first (the high score indicates the greatest need.) If the first donor’s surgeon does not accept the organ then the liver specialists at UNOS will offer the liver to matched patients according to the MELD/PELD scores until the organ is accepted. Geographic factors are also taken into consideration, but livers can stay healthy outside the body for 12 to 24 hours so the UNOS liver team has greater flexibility than the teams that work with hearts and lungs ( Partnering With Your Transplant Team (PDF) , page 10). See the OPTN/UNOS Allocation of Livers Policy (PDF) for details. To learn more about how MELD/PELD scores are assigned, see the OPTN MELD/PELD calculators

Who Gets a Kidney?
The average waiting time for a kidney is 1,121 days. (UNOS/OPTN Annual Report 2003) When a UNOS team selects possible recipients for a donor kidney, they consider a variety of characteristics of both the donor and the recipient, including tissue match, blood type, blood antibody levels (which show how active the immune system is at the current time – too much activity increases the risk of rejection), length of time on the waiting list, whether the recipient is a child, whether the body sizes of the donor and recipient are a good match, and geographic factors. Kidneys can stay healthy outside the body for between 48 and 72 hours, so the UNOS kidney team can consider many more candidates than the heart or lung teams

Who Gets a Pancreas?
The average waiting time for a pancreas is 501 days. (UNOS/OPTN Annual Report 2003) The pancreas can remain healthy outside the body for 12 to 24 hours .A person who is offered a donor pancreas can be selected from people waiting for a pancreas transplant alone, a kidney-pancreas combination transplant, or a combined kidney-pancreas-islet transplant. The Islets of Langerhans are cells inside the pancreas that secrete insulin. They can be transplanted by themselves if the whole organ does not need to be used. An islet transplant is the kind of transplant that is most useful for people with diabetes whose pancreas is healthy but the Islets of Langerhans, do not make insulin. Insulin is needed to break down sugar. People who have had pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and have damage all through their pancreas need the whole organ. See the OPTN/UNOS Allocation of Pancreas Policy (PDF) for details.

We Want Your Band For The Best of SignMeTo Roadrunner Records' Digital Sampler...

Roadrunner Records is proud to announce the creation of the first digital sampler featuring artists and scouts from their exclusive demo submission site SignMeTo Roadrunner Records. We’ve already got a few picks of our own, but we’re relying on our dedicated scouts to find more artists to populate the sampler. Want in on the action? Follow the steps below:

Artists:
- Create an Artist Profile on SignMeTo Roadrunner Records
- Upload a song to your profile
- Tag your band WS10
- Promote your artist page

Scouts
- Create a Scout Profile on SignMeTo Roadrunner Records
- Review artists who have tagged themselves WS10

If you don't make it on to this sampler, don't fret! There will be plenty more.
